Refurbishment Case Studies

Case Study 1

Refurbishment Case Study 1 was an existing Kidney shaped pool that Tanby Swimming Pools had built in the 1970’s for the previous owner. While this was structurally sound and did not leak, the appearance was dated. Due to the shape of the pool, installing any cover would have been awkward and therefore the pool was not often heated and rarely used. The client’s wish list included – a modern looking and contemporary design, ease of use and low maintenance with reduced running costs and a spa.

From 1970’s styling…

Rather than fill in this pool, the client decided to transform it into a usable asset for the family and property.

Client Feedback

“From start to finish the service was extremely professional. Firstly we had a free, no obligation consultation at a time convenient to us.
The design ideas were great and we knew early on that the quality of the finished product was paramount to Tanby. The job was completed within budget and on time with minimal disruption and the finished product exceeded our expectations. We have an amazing pool with features we had never thought of.
Even when we changed our mind about certain features halfway through the installation, everything was sorted out, within the original budget.
Tanby also really helped us in matters  not involving themselves, for example they helped us replace our old oil tank with no benefit to themselves.
We have had no problems with the installation but we feel very confident that if we did, Tanby would take care of everything with no fuss.”

Case Study 2

When discussing the options for an outdoor pool it was agreed that the ideal location for the new pool was exactly in the place of a very old and solidly built ( approx. 50 years old ) below ground water storage tank.

swimming pool refurbishment
We explained that there would be considerable cost in removing this structure and why not consider converting it.
swimming pool refurbishment
Due to the size of the tank 2.5m x 5m x 2m deep we thought we could convert it to a usable pool by installing a counter current, shallow end and safe steps.
swimming pool refurbishment
Add to this the Extreme lining system, all new pool fittings, pipe work, filtration a safety cover, plus an air to water heat pump, we not only fulfilled but exceeded their aspirations.

One main consideration which led the program of works was the imminent arrival of their first child. With this in mind all of the equipment was over specified so that they could have the water heated to a very inviting temperature for the youngest of bathers and a much faster turnover rate.

We felt that this was an excellent opportunity to use the latest of industry innovations from the Extreme lining system to the Air to water heat pump.

“Just a quick email to tell you how pleased we are with our new (reconditioned pool). We have come a long way from the grungy cesspit we started out with!!!
We have been particularly pleased with the level of customer service that we received during the refurb – it is always a comfort to know that whenever we had a query or concern we could get hold of you and you would always be happy to visit us to answer questions.

We set you a very tight deadline to complete the works – the imminent arrival of our baby meant we wanted your guys in and out in good time. We were very impressed that you managed to get everything done with time to spare and without compromising the quality of the finish.
Thanks again Martin for everything; we have a fantastic swimming pool to enjoy!!”

Case Study 3

The existing indoor pool was a very dated oval, 70’s style pool with blue blend mosaic tiles and broken, yellowed plastic grilles. The pool was visible from the beautiful kitchen, but the client hated the look of the pool and consequently it was seldom used so the decision was made to fill it in.

swimming pool - Bouchard
We convinced her that the pool could be totally transformed into a stunning pool to be admired, enjoyed by all the family and an asset to the property.
swimming pool - bouchard
We have retained the original shell and shape of the pool within the new rectangle pool but have provided the client with the appearance of straight lines.

Using the oval shape we diamond cut a rectangular shape into the pool to create a lower cheek area, integrated with a step section across one end of the pool, whilst creating deeper seating areas at the other end of the pool, within the new rectangular shape.

Shaded charcoal mosaic tiles with granite copings, granite steps, and lounging area the end result gives the appearance of a sheet of glass, slick, contemporary and inviting.

Client Feedback

“Our 30-year old indoor pool was very much showing its age with broken but irreparable plastic surrounds and its outdated, tired look. We approached Tanby for a quote for refurbishment and to discuss whether there was a way to change its shape from an oval, which didn’t make the best use of the space, to a rectangular one. We understood that we needed to keep the general structure of the pool so didn’t hold much hope that such a transformation was feasible.

Anita and Martin took great care to understand what we were after and came up with ideas and drawings. Some minor tweaks later, we agreed a concept and the quote and went ahead with the work.

Having lived through 14 months of building work a couple of years before, we were dreading the upheaval and were pleasantly surprised by the care that Tanby took to minimise the impact on our household with the site clearly contained and cleared every evening. Paul and his team could not have been more pleasant, friendly and professional. They didn’t hesitate to work on several weekends and late in the evening to meet a deadline and would have been there on Christmas Eve (even though their company had shut for the holiday), save for the floods.

Similarly Anita was only one email away and never lost her patience with us when responding to our questions late at night or at the weekend. She also kept us well informed of the progress, deadlines and the challenges the team was facing.

We have enjoyed working with Tanby from the beginning of the project and we are delighted with the results. We couldn’t have imagined that our pool could be transformed so radically and Tanby ensured we were happy at every step of the way.”

Case Study 4

This liner pool was functioning but our clients wanted to move the above ground safety cover into a pit and to tile the pool. The shell was found to be sound so we removed the old fibreglass roman end and extended the pool to create a rectangular shape, building a pit at the shallow end to allow for the existing Aquamatic Safety Cover to be altered to fit the new pit housed roller. We built steps in the shallow end with a 1m wide tread for young children to play on and placed the pool returns in the top step to create some fun with the water flow. A Fastlane Counter Current was installed for the older children and adults that gives hours of fun and exercise.

“Mike, I and the children would like to thank you and your team in the transformation of our existing swimming pool. Having gone through an extensive building project to build our dream home you helped us complete this in changing our pool from a dated looking area with a pool liner to an extremely contemporary design. We appreciate all the advice and wealth of knowledge you have in guiding us in the right direction from the size steps best suited for our family life to the swim jet for training, or should I say endless hours of fun for the kids. We really have had an amazing summer so far and I think utilised it more in the these last few months to the last 10 years.

Many thanks to you all.”

Case Study 5

The existing pool was a liner pool with a fibreglass roman end. They were delighted with our suggestions to add an automatic cover and create a rectangular pool incorporating the roman end shape with shallow cheeks to either side. We removed the fibreglass steps and built block work and render steps in their place. A Touch in-situ liner in slate effect with black fittings and twilight coping stones complete the transformation. The existing filtration equipment was sound but new pipework and an extra sump were added. A reinforced back dividing wall and cover pit was constructed to house the automatic safety cover.

“We love our new pool. It is looks contemporary and stylish and is so easy to use and keep clean now with the automatic cover. The small details like the custom covers to the cover pump and hosing so that they are perfectly camouflaged against the safety cover and the black pool fittings show the care and attention to detail that we had hoped for. Our garden has now been transformed”

Case Study 6

This large L shaped marblelite pool, with a corner spa and roman end was losing water and had been redundant for years. Changes to the pool shape were made to allow for the installation of a pool cover. The client also wanted a very serene feel to the pool, so a plain blue liner with a mosaic tileband was installed with 5 colour change lights for effect with cream surrounding paving. We created unique large steps into the pool from the deep end, which allows a high level lounging area in the sunny spot of the garden. A new plant room and separate changing room were neatly tucked in the corner of the pool area.

“Our old pool was an L-shape pool with each length measuring roughly 11 meters. In the corner of the ‘L’ there was a disused jacuzzi. Our children loved the size of the pool, but given the L-shape we had to use 2 separate covers on manual rollers. This was very time consuming each time we wanted to use the pool. In addition, many leaves would get into the pool. We knew that an electric cover would be ideal, but that this was going to be challenging with the L-shape. When we contacted Tanby, Anita suggested converting our pool into a large rectangle pool measuring 7 x 11 meters, so that an electric cover could be installed. The old jacuzzi was converted into large, contemporary steps into the pool. This is now a very beautiful feature in our pool.

Besides the pool refurbishing, we also replaced the entire terrace with the same stone that is used for the coping stones. The plant room and changing shed were both rebuild. On the technical side, all pool equipment was replaced and modernised. Our old, expensive gas-fired boiler is replaced by a modern, efficient inverter heat pump. Anita has been instrumental in advising us on the various options to accommodate our wishes and her breadth of knowledge shows that Tanby is on top of all new developments and is very capable to undertake a project of this size and scope.

Paul’s team that undertook the construction work were very pleasant. They worked very hard and, more importantly, to a high standard. Paul kept us fully up to date on the progress during the entire project.

Many thanks to you all at Tanby, for realising our new pool to a very high standard. We all love our new pool and terrace and are sure that we will enjoy it for many years to come.”

Case Study 7

The old kidney shaped pool with tile band and marblelite floors and walls needed refurbishment. The client wanted to make the pool the focal point of the garden with water features, so we installed a water cannon along with 4 mini jets that work alternately with the push of a poolside button. We also added small sections of handrail for the clients to use for exercise within the pool.

A separate spa with 20 jets enhancing the hydrotherapy aspect was countersunk into the pool surround and tiled in matching tiles to the pool, continuing the slick colour scheme.

An ordinary kidney shaped pool has been transformed into a fun and therapeutic environment.

“We inherited our 20+ year-old pool when we bought an older house in Shepperton. It was clear that it needed quite a lot of work on both the pool itself and the whole of the pump, heating and filtration systems. We were very disappointed with the proposals from two local specialists and contacted the original builder of the pool who was semi-retired and therefore not willing to undertake the refurbishment. However he strongly recommended Tanby as being a family company similar to his own with an excellent reputation.

The Tanby team have done an excellent job, completely refurbishing the pool to a very high standard, doing some re-modelling within the pool and replacing the whole of the pool surround while adding some new features such as a water cannon, decorative sprays and some exercise bars as well as replacing lighting. In addition, the team installed an excellent complimentary sunken spa adjacent to the pool with its own air and waterjet systems as well as an outside shower Anita has, very patiently, responded to every query as the work progressed and given us excellent advice on our new ideas and found a way to incorporate just about all of them.”

Case Study 8

The existing very deep pool was situated on a sloping garden, had no shallow end and was not suitable for children. The client wanted to reduce the depth of the pool to create two shallower tiers for their grandchildren. Reinforcing rods and concrete were used to create anchors to hold the pool in place to counteract the large amount of extra concrete added to reduce the depth of the pool.

“From the moment I called in Tanby’s design team, to the time my wife and I and our children and grandchildren were enjoying ourselves in the new pool their speed and professionalism was of the highest order.

As we have used Tanby before and they have serviced our pool for over 20 years, they were the natural choice for our pool to be re-designed. You won’t find a better pool company to look after you.”

Case Study 9

The client had an existing outdoor pool with a roman end but he wanted a safety cover and needed the pool to be shallower without losing any length. We reduced the depth and squared off the roman end section to create a paddling or lounging area in the shallow end. The step section allowed an extension to the pool and created a focal point which is safe to use with the addition of non-slip tiles. The contemporary slate copings continue onto the steps and the change of pool shape enabled the fitting of the safety cover with no compromises on functionality or design.

“We had a tired and neglected outdoor pool that had been rather forgotten for several years. I contacted Tanby Pools and asked for their suggestions on modernising it and making it more user friendly. They were very prompt to discuss options available to me and made recommendations that met our needs perfectly. The pool now looks modern and is so easy to use, no more manually removing a cover we can do it at the turn of a key and we still have the step section that we liked within a new shape. The overall finish is better than we could have imagined and that’s thanks to everyone at Tanby.”

Case Study 10

The finished pool is a fantastic transformation from the original indoor pool to the new outdoor infinity end pool.

The existing pool building was demolished and the deep end of the pool made shallower. The far end wall was lowered to create an infinity wall. Internal steps with lights and a pit installed at the shallow end for the PoolLock safety cover. New tiles and plantroom equipment including heating were also installed.

A drab, poorly functioning, indoor pool is now a glistening, working feature in a beautiful garden. The eyesore building has gone and the pool with its iridescent tiles, sparkles in the sunshine. The soft grey coloured safety cover, white limestone paving surround and ivy covered wall add a Mediterranean flavour to the entire project.

“For many years we had been left with an indoor pool which we inherited from the previous owners of our property. Whilst it was lovely in winter, the location drastically affected the view of the garden – the building and plant machinery were all ageing, with likely increasing costs.

After much soul searching we took the radical step of demolishing the building. As well as massively reducing the running costs, creating a virtually new outdoor pool has both transformed the appeal of the garden and view from the house but also multiplied our use of the pool. Adding an infinity end has completed the stunning new look and made it an important feature of the garden.”

Case Study 11

From a dated 70’s style pool and dark depressing pool hall into a safe contemporary pool, with clean fresh lines. Altering the pool shape allowed a safety cover to be installed and adding an air source heat pump ensures lower running costs in the summer. We also supplied and installed a sauna in what was the original plantroom for additional wellness in the leisure space for adults.

The transformation is bright, modern and stunning. The light and airy pool house is now used every day.

“When we bought our current house, we acquired a monument to 1970’s bad taste in the form of a very tired swimming pool with a dated roman end, a manual cover, carpet surround, broken lights, non-functioning air conditioning and a general air of neglect that nobody wanted to use. Tanby were extremely helpful throughout the refurbishment, beginning with ideas about the changes we should make and the changes we could make, right through to the eventual completion of the works. This has transformed our pool into a modern, bright and airy space that is used all the time. We even have the added benefit that when the pool and air-handling plant was combined from two plant rooms into one, we had a spare room that we turned into a sauna, also installed by Tanby!”

Case Study 12

The old hexagonal panel liner pool was in poor condition and our client wanted a deeper rectangular pool with a safety cover and diving board. We removed all the old shell, built a blockwork shell with a concrete floor ready to accept the pool liner.

The dated and temporary looking liner pool has been transformed into a stunning contemporary pool. Small lights were added to the pool, with four along each side and 2 in the steps to add ambience at night time. The garden has received a make-over as well and the pool is now part of a beautiful new social and leisure space.

“When we bought our house we inherited a small hexagonal liner pool that was in very poor condition and struggling to hold water to the correct level. We contacted Tanby and after a very informative meeting with Anita, we found out that the options for our pool were much better than we could have imagined. We decided to go the whole hog and take out the existing liner pool and build a new rectangular pool, still a liner but with internal steps and a safety cover, which was important to us for our children. The project took some time to complete as Tanby had to co-ordinate with our landscapers who were also working on the garden, but it all went “swimmingly” and we now have a beautiful, safe and fully functioning pool, that looks great in our newly landscaped garden. The Tanby team were really helpful, always accommodating to other trades on site and their ideas and suggestions were great and their interpretation of what we wanted is better than we hoped for.”

Case Study 13

The client had a small 9m liner pool that they wished to extend to create a 12m length pool.

We extended the pool and created a new step section. White led lights were added along the length of the pool to further enhance the serene colour choice of the Extreme liner and surround. Copings, surround paving and cover pit were added and the new safety cover was installed at the deep end of the pool. The overall effect is calming and light, working beautifully with the cottage style garden and Oast house.

“The refurbishment of our very old pool was largely taken off of our hands by the team at Tanby. The Project Manager’s outstanding knowledge of the liner and automatic cover options was vital in helping us to select the right products. The end result is exactly what we wished for – a stunning pool area which nestles into the garden perfectly.”

Case Study 14

The pool had been completely boarded over and the basement pool hall dark, damp and peeling. We converted the original deck level pool to a freeboard design with a safety cover, installing a Fastlane Counter Current which is perfect for the client’s rigorous training and water sports regime. The large inefficient halogen lights were filled in and small colour change led lights installed to give the pool a more contemporary feel. The client didn’t want a step section but wanted access for the children so we installed two step ladders at each end of the pool. The pool is very deep to allow the client to teach his young children to dive. The huge tiger shark mural reminds the pool users of this family’s passion.

“Tanby Pools are an exceptional company. We met with several pool companies but it was very clear to us as soon as we met Tanby that they were the firm for our major pool refurbishment. We were absolutely delighted with their project planning, their level of service, their commitment to getting the job done and their attention to detail. Our pool really wouldn’t be what it is today without them. They have transformed our pool from being a burden to the house and turned it into something beautiful and functional and it is a pleasure to use it everyday. Thank you Tanby.”

Case Study 15

The existing pool had been neglected for many years and filled with various debris and rubble. The client wanted to create a covered pool that they could get the maximum use out of but still retain the shape of the pool. We suggested an enclosure as the perfect choice for safety and aesthetics.

The old halogen lighting was changed to retrofit led lights. All damaged pipework and pool equipment redundant, so new pipework was run to the new plantroom. The seventies style pool with tileband and bare concrete was transformed by fresh, blue mosaics, grey coping stones and paving, giving it a modern, classic look.

The new Alukov enclosure design suits the client’s needs perfectly.

“When we moved into our house we inherited what was originally a swimming pool but now was a dumping ground for all debris, plant life and wildlife that could find its way there. In speaking to Tanby we realised that we could make this pool and the area around it a special place for us to have family time and relax. We wanted to make it available to us despite the unpredictability of the British weather and after discussing options we decided on a high level enclosure. The project was very involved as we needed full landscaping to be done at the same time, but the Tanby team worked hard to transform our pool area into a light, safe and user friendly environment for the whole family to use. The enclosure company recommended by Tanby were very thorough, helpful and understanding of my needs and the Tanby team were always attentive and courteous, making the project stress free. The back up support we have had since the project finished is an added bonus and nice to know that Tanby are just a phone call away”
